The inn has fifteenth century origins and much of the current structure, including handsome exposed beams, is likely to date from then. The Crown Inn would have served the coach and carriage trade on the busy route to and from the prosperous towns of Bath and Bristol. The origins of the tiny hamlet of Giddea Hall are more obscure although in the eighteenth century the term "giddy hall" was probably not meant as a compliment! The neighbouring village of Yatton Keynell has a more verifiable history with the gabled manor house, now seen across the fields, dominating the life of the locality since its construction in 1659. Although the fine parish church was largely restored in 1868, its chapel dates from the building of the church of Sir William Keynell around 1250 to celebrate his safe return from the Crusades - hence the unusual dedication to St Margaret of Antioch.
